Calls for Submission: Korea-Nigeria Poetry Fiesta 2012

The first ever Korea –Nigeria Poetry Fiesta was held to commemorate the 2011 World Poetry Day with theme CULTURE OF FRIENDSHIP, with  a cross-cultural anthology titled FROM HERE TO THERE scheduled for release later this year.

In view of these, Arojah Concepts, in collaboration with the Korean Cultural Centre of the Embassy of Republic of Korea invites interested poets to send in entries for the 2nd Korea-Nigeria Poetry Fiesta which is scheduled to hold on Wednesday 21st March 2012 in commemoration of this year’s World Poetry Day.

Interested poets are expected to send in 5 poems each based on the theme: Intangible Cultural Heritage ties between Korea-Nigeria to arojahconcepts@yahoo.com on before 10th March 2012.

Intangible Cultural Heritage means the practices, representations, expressions, knowledge, skills – as well as the instruments, objects, artifacts and cultural spaces associated therewith – that communities, groups and, in some cases, individuals recognize as part of their cultural heritage. This intangible cultural heritage, transmitted from generation to generation, is constantly recreated by communities and groups in response to their environment, their interaction with nature and their history, and provides them with a sense of identity and continuity, thus promoting respect for cultural diversity and human creativity.

Selected poems will be featured/performed at the World Poetry Day event, the Korean Cultural Centre website and in a proposed cross-cultural anthology.

Bula Mbungue Releases Poetry Book

Caxito — A poetry book entitled "Pétalas D'Amor" of the Angolan writer, Bula Mbungue, will be released on April 28 in Caxito, capital of northern Bengo province, under the commemorations of the 29th anniversary of this city to be marked on April 26.

Bula Mbungue was born on 17 July 1980 in Saurimo city, north-eastern Lunda Sul province, and started writing poems in the 90s, having enrolled into the Literature Youth Brigade of Angola (BJLA) in Luanda, where he learnt techniques of the art of literature.

The book, which comprises 44 poems written in Portuguese, reflects the problems of Angolan youths, in particular, and the society, in general. It has 59 pages and 1,000 copies will be released in a first phase.

According to the artist, the poems also portray aspects related to moral and civic education and include messages of approximation and union among people, belief in the existence of God, as well as mutual love and fighting against changing of minds.

Mbungue is a journalist of the Angola Press Agency (ANGOP) at the provincial delegation of Bengo, and he is a student of the first international relations course of the Wanhenga Xitu University.

The NLNG Prize for Literature Goes Poetic...

The Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas Limited (NLNG)has called for entries for the 2009 Nigeria Prize for Literature. This year's competition is for poetry and the winner goes home with $50,000.

The prize for literature, which rotates yearly among the four literary genres of prose fiction, poetry, drama and children's literature is open only to published works by Nigerian writers resident in the country.

Interested persons are to send six copies of their entry, submitted either by the author or publisher, to the External Relations Division, Nigeria LNG Limited, latest March 14, 2009.

Instituted six years ago, it is the biggest literary prize in Nigeria. Past winners include Kaine Agary, Gabriel Okara, Ezenwa Ohaeto, Ahmed Yerima, Mabel Segun and Akachi Adimora-Ezeigbo.
